Double Seventh Festival
The Double Seventh
Festival is also called
Qixi (七夕). It
falls on the seventh day of the
seventh lunar month, so the festival
is called
the Double Seventh Festival.
This Double
Seventh Festival is the Chinese Valentine's
Day. There
is a legend, "Cowherd and the
Weaver Girl" behind
the
festival.
“Cowherd
and the Weaver Girl”
(牛郎与织女 niú láng yú zhī
nǚ)
is a
romantic but said legend.
This
story talks about a
forbidden love
between a
cowherd (牛郎 niú
láng) on
earth and
a fairy (Weaver
Girl 织女 zhī
nǚ)
from
the heavens. They
faced great
objections from the fairy's parents
(the God and the
Goddess). They
were eventually
separated
by
a
Milky Way between them
which was formed
blocking them to meet
each other. Later, the
Goddess was moved
by their true love, and
allowed them
to reunite
on this
special day through
a bridge which
is
formed
by a flock
of the magpies
in the world.
The
Double Seventh Festival is
a special day for the lovers.
In recent years, people
celebrate this
special day more like
a Valentine's day.
For young couples,
there are flowers,
chocolates, presents
and romantic dinners usually
involved.
But no
matter how
people
celebrate this
festival, it
is a
day to spend
with your
loved ones, and
cherish those
who you love.
