The Lantern Festival is the 15th day of the
first lunar month
which is the first full moon of the year.
It is the final day and climax of the Chinese New Year, and
a day for
appreciating
the bright
full moon, and
family reunion.
This festival
has a history of more than 2000 years.
It is called Lantern Festival because
the most important activity during
the night of the event is to admire
colorful lanterns at the festival
night. The lanterns are various
including palace lanterns,
animal lanterns, figure
lanterns, toy lanterns and flower
lanterns.
Another
popular
activity at Lantern
festival is
guessing
lantern
riddles. People
are encouraged
to compete to
guessing
the
riddles.
This
intellectual
activity is
very exciting.
The Lantern Festival is also
called Yuanxiao
Festival
because it is a
traditional custom to eat Yuanxiao on that
day. Yuanxiao is a round
glutinous rice ball filled
with different kinds of
sweet stuffing, such as
sweet red bean paste, sesame
paste, or peanut butter. The
pronunciation of
Yuanxiao and the round shape
of it
have the
meaning of union, harmony
and happiness.
